 Dr. Alfred Vanderpuije was confirmed as the Mayor of the New Millennium City of Accra with an unprecedented majority of 97.7% by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in May 2009
He has led a strong campaign of turning Accra into a modern city. He is confronting the perennial flooding in Accra by pulling down unauthorized structures in the city and constructing storm drains.
Even at the risk of making the government unpopular and thereby loosing vote, the mayor says indiscipline must be tackled head-on and believes Ghanaiains will ultimately vote for the right thing.
Education of the youth is very dear to his heart and in a fundraising football game to raise funds for one of the educational project, he fractured his arm. But he says "It\'s all for the love of the children"
